When you are an athlete, there is a lot that is demanded from your body. Therefore, you have to fuel it the right way.
When baked, broiled or even pan seared, fish can give you the protein you need without weighing you down with a lot of extra fat. There are also a lot of interesting ways to cook it so you can make it taste delicious even if you are not a big fan of fish.
Chicken should be one of your go to meals. It is easy to prepare, it is far healthier than eating red meat such a steak, and you can prepare it in so many different ways that you never feel like you are getting stuck eating the same meal twice.
A lot of people still have the misconception that eggs are incredibly unhealthy but the truth is, you need the protein that you can get from them if you are going to be asking a lot from your body. As long as you eat them in moderation, you shouldn’t have a problem.
4. Dairy Products
Dairy products are another item that a lot of people have a problem with. If you are demanding a lot from your body, don’t be afraid of things like milk and cheese. You can get a ton of protein from it and in a pinch, it can serve as a quick meal until you can get to something more substantial. Obviously, you should watch your calorie intake but the more you demand from your body, the more calories you burn so you would be hard-pressed to consume enough dairy products for it to become a problem.
Nuts are always a good source of protein and they can also help fill you up. If you need something that you can take with you on the go that doesn’t have to be refrigerated and can refuel your body at a moment’s notice, this is an excellent option.
6. Green Leafy Vegetables
No diet is complete without a large quantity of vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables. It helps you stay full for a longer amount of time and it also gives you the important antioxidants that you need for your body to recover when it is under a great deal of stress. Protein is important, but it is just as important to make sure that you are eating a lot of vegetables on a daily basis.
Most athletes try to stay away from sweets. If you have something of a sweet tooth but you want to stay at the top of your game, try consuming an apple or an orange each day. This will give you that sweet taste that you are craving without adding a lot of empty calories.
This is obviously one of the most important things you can consume in order for your body to perform at its best. It is virtually impossible to expect your body to consistently perform if it is not being hydrated properly. In most cases, you can forget about the fancy sports drinks and just drink plain water. It will replenish your body and give you that extra boost of energy that you need.
9. Homemade Smoothies
Forget about the smoothies from the store that are full of sugar and other empty calories and use fruit and vegetables to make them at home. You can find all kinds of tasty recipes that cater to both your personal taste and your needs. You can also use them to fuel your body up for whatever punishment you plan on subjecting it to later on.
10. Protein Shakes
Protein shakes are another good option. You can fuel up quickly, they don’t have a lot of empty calories and they have all of the important vitamins and minerals that you need. They also work exceptionally well when you simply don’t have the time to prepare something more elaborate.
